On Tuesday and Wednesday, May 8-9, 2007, we introduced the world to the Mouth Piano at the ITP Spring Show. Developed with Mandy O'Brien for our Assistive Technology class, the Mouth Piano is an adaptive musical interface that allows users with limited hand and/or feet usage to express themselves via music while providing physical therapy for their oral motor mechanism (tongue, lips, teeth, and cheeks).
Currently we have two modular pianos -- one with 6 notes and one with 7 -- that can be attached to mouth guards with velcro. We received overwhelmingly positive feedback at the show, though some people looked as us as though we'd lost our minds. Sadly, we weren't able to play any recognizable songs by the show - only some unorganized notes - but hey, Rome wasn't build in a day...
